This rare shell is in excellent unfired condition. The bulbous nose section of the shell has a clean body with light to moderate pitting. The tapering tail of the shell is in like condition with 12 very pronounced raised ribs. At the bottom of the shell is a round iron base that was used to seat the wooden sabot which is now gone. The center of this round base has what appears to be a lathe dimple. The fuse hole in the nose has no threads showing that it took a wooden fuse plug and paper time fuse.

This shell and others were recovered at the site where a caisson tumbled off a bridge at Provencal, Louisiana during the Red River Campaign. It is believed that these rounds were made at the Confederate Arsenal in Marshall, Texas.

This is a super nice example of a rare shell.
