This is the skin only of a Pattern 1826 eagle breast plate that was worn on the cartridge box sling. The plate is 90% present. The eagle is visible but there is a crack running through the face of the plate. It appears that this crack has been glued. The edges of the plate are worn and have some missing material.
The reverse is devoid of any lead and has a black discoloration or burn mark at center. It has often been said that the Confederates melted the lead out of these plates to make bullets. This looks like it could have been done with this plate.
The original label must have sold with another skin because we have a copy of the original typed label that reads “UNION ARMY CARTRIDGE SLING EMBLEMS GAINE’S [sic] MILL MAY, 1966.”
