This is the “Puppy Paw” style hooks only off the back of a Pattern 1839 oval US belt plate. The piece is shaped like the letter “Y” with the posts on the two parallel arms. The hook for the plate would have been at the base of the “Y” but that has broken off.
With the item is an old typed tag that reads “BELT BUCKLE FROGS WINTER CAMPSITE STAFFORD COUNTY VIRGINIA-1974.”
