Stripped relic condition Model 1855 lockplate recovered in a US campsite at Wauhatchie, Tennessee. The lock is rusted and devoid of any parts. Just visible on the front are the letters “……..ELD” of SPRINGFIELD and the date “1858.” The Maynard Tape Primer door and mechanism is also gone.
An old typed label attached to the back of the item reads “1858 SPRINGFIELD LOCK PLATE U.S. CAMPSITE WALLATCHIE, TENN.” The name “WAUHATCHIE” is misspelled on the tag.
