This unusual and rare grouping of artifacts is from a makeshift or temporary, unknown grave site is of a North Carolina soldier who perished during the battle at Fredericksburg, Virginia. Included in the group are a brass cast, Virginia-style, rectangular ‘CSA’ belt plate, and three, relic North Carolina NC8-type coat buttons with pieces of original gray cloth still on the button backs. In addition, there are two, small, blue ceramic trouser buttons, and two 1862-dated Indian Head pennies. The soldier’s body was buried in his gray wool winter coat, and these items likely dropped to the ground at the grave location when the body was exhumed for transfer and burial after the war.

The brass waist belt plate is the sought-after, Virginia-style rectangular CSA belt plate. Face retains the rough background and the raised letters “C. S. A.” Face also features bumps on the face from application of the two brass hooks, and from the brass clasp on back. The single belt loop clasp has broken off but both hooks are present and tight. They are pushed down to the base. All three-piece buttons bear pieces of the soldier’s original gray coat cloth with one button have a 1½” long piece attached to it. All buttons are intact and free of thumb depressions. All show surface rust and erosion but two have hints of the original gold gilt on the face. All three shanks are intact. Too hard to discern any stampings or maker’s makers. The state seal of North Carolina with the two female figures, Liberty and Plenty, are easily visible on the faces. The two Indian Head cent pennies are rusted but the dates “1862” on both are quite visible. This rare and unique grouping from the Fredericksburg battlefield area enhance any Confederate collection or American military plate display. Comes in its own riker case and a modern printed label within a plastic holder.
