This is the skin only of a Pattern 1839 oval US belt or cartridge box plate. Half of the letter “U” is gone and there are freeze cracks around the edges.  Reverse has no lead whatsoever.

Old typed label with the item reads “U.S. OVAL PLATE FRONT SPOTSYLVANIA, VIRGINIA BATTLEFIELD-1973.”
