This plate has a stamped brass face and a lead filled back with tongue and two “puppy paw” style hooks.
The face of the plate bears the state seal of Georgia. The brass surface of the face has a nice even dark patina but the detail of the seal is very good. There is some slight waviness to the plate around the edges but nothing major. The face is actually quite pleasing to look at.
The reverse has 100% of the lead fill with both “puppy paw” style posts and tongue. It is noted that there were repairs done to the reverse but if so it was expertly done as nothing stands out as an obvious repair.
Steve Mullinax in his book Confederate Belt Buckles & Plates states that these plates were made by E. Gaylord of Massachusetts before the war.
This is a very pleasing and attractive version of this plate.
