This Confederate artifact, in good condition, is an excavated, local-made brass button as worn on many ranking Southern officer’s uniforms. The convex, coat-size button is of two-piece construction and is classed as a “CS275A1” in Warren Tice’s reference volume. The circular, 21mm brass specimen exhibits a crude, droop-winged eagle centered on a plain field without stars. The eagle’s head faces to his right. Entire face wears a dark rust-colored patina and retains no gold gilt. Face has no depressions. Reverse is blank and has a depressed channel which shows traces of gold gilt. Shank present but has been bent completely over and is loose. Button would display nicely in any Civil War button collection or Confederate officer’s display.
