This desirable, excavated Alabama artifact is a seldom seen example of a two-piece brass button as worn on the uniforms of Alabama militia soldiers. Locally made, the coat-size button is of two-piece construction with no border. With no original gilt, the entire face wears a dark rust oxidation and has been covered with a lacquer-type sealant. The circular, 22mm brass device exhibits the State seal that shows the US eagle / Union shield device on the face. Face is worn with little detail and is free of any thumb pushes or dents. Button is in good excavated condition but is missing its shank. Artifact is classified as a GA AB202A1 in Warren Tice’s reference volume. Blank backside with a depressed channel is rough with no marks. This difficult to find Alabama State seal button makes a fine addition to any Civil War button display or to a Alabama-focused collection.
