This Confederate artifact, in good condition, is an excavated, local-made brass button as worn on many high ranking Southern officer’s uniforms. The convex, coat-size button is of two-piece construction and is classed as a “CS 275A1” in Warren Tice’s reference volume. The circular, 21mm brass specimen exhibits a crude, droop-winged eagle centered on a plain field without stars. The eagle’s head faces to his right. Face retains original, gold gilt in protected areas as does the backside. Gilt is still bright. Face has a slight depression at the left talon where the border edge seam shows a separation. Reverse is not backmarked but may be a blank Casmir Rouyer product from New Orleans. Back has a depressed channel. Unfortunately the shank is missing. A seldom seen, excavated specimen of an original Confederate General Staff officer’s button, this would display nicely in any Civil War button collection or Confederate officer’s display.
