This is a wonderful complete fired Hotchkiss 3.8-inch bolt found by the late Tom Dickey in the redan of the 3rd Louisiana at Vicksburg. The body is smooth and clean while the sabot has raised lines of rifling from the gun that fired it. There is a small square of white paint with a black number “13” painted on the side of the base cup. The bolt has been cleaned and stabilized and is in beautiful condition. The patent information cast into the base cup is not readable though hints of the letters can be seen.
This size bolt was meant for use in the James rifle.
