Item Code: R19583

Iron tang and blade of a Confederate Bowie knife in good condition. Item is rusted throughout with small amounts of loss along the true edge. Overall length is 14.50 inches long from the tip of the tang to the blade point. The blade meas. approx. 1.75 inches wide at the ricasso and then gently tapers to the point. Active rust has been cleaned off. One side of the blade has an old typed paper label. The opposite side has been coated with a clear lacquer to protect the surface. Label reads “CONFEDERATE BOWIE KNIFE FOUND IN TRENCHES OCCUPIED BY ELZY’S DIVISION ON MAY 5-7, 1864. MAY 1960.” The dates on the tag suggest that this piece was recovered on the Wilderness Battlefield. However, General Arnold Elzey was not present at that battle. As far as is known Elzey was commanding the Department of Richmond at that time. Most likely the writer of the tag was mistaken as to whose troops held the trench in which he was digging.
