CONFEDERATE 3.67 INCH 20 POUNDER SMOOTH READ SHELL

$995.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 727-347

The body of this shell has light pitting throughout but is fairly clean with only light surface rust.

Cast into the side of the shell just below the nose is “AR.” On his excellent website www.civilwarartillery.com Jack Melton explains “The letters "AR" are possibly the manufacturing stamp of A.J. Rahm, who was proprietor of Eagle Machine Works, located in Richmond, Virginia. His company manufactured artillery, artillery carriages, ammunition and tools, and outfitted gunboats during the period between 1862 and 1864. Several Read-Parrott specimens with the "AR" stamp have been recovered from sites in Virginia and South Carolina.”

The base of this shell still retains the iron sabot which shows some light signs of firing. In the nose is a copper Confederate paper time fuse adapter.

Attached to the side of the shell is a typed paper label saying the shell was recovered at Petersburg, VA.
