This dug Model 1849 Pocket Colt is complete except for the grips. The serial number of 27706 matches on the base of the grip and the trigger guard which are the only two places where it can be seen. The serial number dates its manufacture to about 1852.
The .31 barrel meas. approx. 4.00 inches long while the cylinder is 5 shot. All the nipples appear to be present and much of the silver wash remains on the frame of the grip. The heavy rust has been removed and the treated metal surfaces remain. Of course most of the metal surfaces are pitted and the trigger is missing the bottom portion.
With the item is a map of the area around Richmond with an arrow pointing to the location of a town named Varina where the pistol was found. This town is located southeast of Richmond.
