Produced by the Federal Ordnance Department during the Civil War, here is a very fine, unfired Type 1 Hotchkiss percussion shell complete with its fuse adapter, lead sabot, and base cup. Recovered from a battery position of the 10th Massachusetts Artillery at Reams Station, Virginia in 2004, the defused projectile has its original time brass fuse adapter intact with its screw treads still strong and sharp in the nose of this artillery round. Even retains its brass screw plug. Specimen wears its original, tight, lead sabot that has no rifling distortions from firing. Body has no flame grooves cut through the lead sabot or base cap. All gun metal surface has light to moderate pitting. The iron base cup is intact and complete. Exterior of the cylindrical shell has acquired a dark patina and exhibits traces of a clear sealant on its surface. This Hotchkiss shell comes with a copy of an old handwritten note made by the digger in April 2004 which gives particulars on the recovery. Length: 7¼”; diameter: 3”. A very fine, intact, complete, early Type I Civil War Hotchkiss percussion shell.
