This lock plate has been cleaned and turned out very nice. There is some pitting around the edges but otherwise the metal surfaces are clean and smooth. The markings on the face of the lock are very visible. Forward of the hammer is a spread-winged eagle above a US. Forward of this is “SAVAGE R. F. A. CO/MIDDLETOWN, CT.” Behind the hammer is “1864.”
The reverse has most of the mainspring and all the inner workings. Hammer is frozen in the full-cock position.
Item was dug at Cold Harbor, Virginia.
