Item Code: 172-3310

This artillery artifact is a Confederate three-inch Read-pattern projectile often referred to as a Smooth Long Read Common Shell. The dug specimen is in very good complete condition. The ten-pound round was likely fired from a Parrot rifle. Shell measures 8¾” in length, weighs approximately 9 pounds and has a diameter of 2.85 inches. Shell sits atop a wrought iron tapered ring sabot that exhibits slight distortion and a broken away missing section at the projectile base from expansion during firing. Sabot shows the impressions of the rifling. The original copper fuse plug adapter at the shell’s nose is intact but missing the paper time fuze. Body of projectile bears light rust pitting and pockmarks, but it is strong and solid. This excavated, defused artillery shell is a complete example of a piece of Confederate heavy ordnance and would make a nice addition to any field artillery display.
