CONFEDERATE 3.67” 6 LB SECTIONED CASE SHOT SPHERICAL SHELL

$395.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M23706

This artillery specimen is a Confederate, 6-pound, 3.67” spherical case shot that has been fired and a section blown out to reveal its matrix compound and a complement of iron case-shot balls within the shell. This Civil War, Southern-produced round measures 3.58” in diameter and weighs five pounds. It exhibits the distinct mold seam on the exterior body but is missing the original Bormann time fuse adapter and paper fusing. The Confederate arsenals removed the Borman device and replaced them with a CS variant time fuse adapter of their own.

With the shell being split open, the interior clearly exhibits the lead balls (case shot) still embedded in the yellow matrix material. The matrix appears to have been smoothed over and highlighted with new yellow paint to enhance the effect. The spherical shell specimen displays a hard, smooth exterior surface and has acquired a pleasing, chocolate brown patina overall. Threaded grooves for the missing fuse are clear and strong and have turned to a dark plum brown coloring and matches the patina of the shell itself. An original, very nice condition, Confederate, six-pound, case shot with its exposed matrix and shot that would make an interesting addition to any Civil War artillery display.
