Here is a fired, Confederate 2.25” Long Bolt “Baby” Mullane shell, often called the Baby Mullane. The Baby Mullane common shell was recovered from the area of the Confederate Arsenal located at Augusta, GA sometime in 1981. Made for the wrought iron 2.25” CS Mountain Rifle, this small, artillery artifact shell measures 4½” long with a 2.2” diameter and weighs 2½ lbs. Projectile is missing its flat, copper disc Type-1 sabot attachment and its doughnut-like wooden dowel around the bolt. Also missing is the wood adapter paper time fuse. Body surface has acquired a dark rust brown colored patina with a hard, heavily rusted case exterior surface that exhibits scattered rust pitting and some impact marks. Shell body exhibits a small painted tag with provenance of the round. This Confederate 2.25” Long Bolt “Baby” Mullane common shell specimen is a good example of a seldom seen Augusta-made artillery round.
