$695.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 727-334

Purchased by the Federal Ordnance Department for the Union artillery. In November 1861, the canister projectile was patented, but they are quite scarce as very few specimens of this style ordnance were recovered during the war, the most being at Harper’s Ferry, WV. This cylindrical iron projectile relic measures 5½” high, is 3” in diameter, was packed with lead case-shot, and had a thin metal lid (cap) secured to the top rim with four pins or rivets. Pin holes are still visible but metal lid is missing. This projectile round retains fifteen original lead balls. Canister bottom exhibits three large holes that enabled the hot gases of the propellant charge to forcefully discharge the balls from the top lid. Lathe dimple in the iron base still visible. Entire relic bears moderate to heavy rust pitting overall but is still strong and ‘rigid.’ A rare artillery canister round collectible.
