The blade on this sword is dark and pitted throughout but it is complete except for a very small piece of the tip which is missing. The brass pommel cap, knuckle bow and guard have a wonderful moderately dark patina that allows all of the details of the decoration to be visible. The leather and wire is missing off the wood grip. The base of the grip is missing a small amount of wood and this causes it to move back and forth on the blade tang. The brass on the hilt is fairly firm.
With the item is a letter from the previous seller to the previous owner explaining that the sword is an import made by Alexander Coppell of Germany. The letter also explains that the sword was found in 1889 by a Union veteran who was attending a barbeque at Crawfish Springs which is now the City of Chickamauga. The sword passed from the veteran to Dr. Rees Butram in payment of a debt. When Dr. Butram died his collection passed to a Civil War dealer who sold it to the writer of this document.
As relics go this sword is in nice shape and Chickamauga relics like this don’t come around that often.
