The face of this oval plate is in nice un-cleaned condition. The top edge and left side have a dark discoloration while the rest of the plate and the letters have a mellow patina. The dark discoloration actually helps the cleaner “SNY” stand out. The face has some minor scratches but is free from major dings and dents.
The reverse has 100% of the lead fill with both arrow style hooks and tongue.
According to “AMERICAN MILITARY BELT PLATES” by Michael O’Donnell and J. Duncan Campbell this style plate is referred to as the “thin letter” style. The name is derived by the narrower width on the base of the letter “S.” the two vertical arms of the “n” and one of the arms of the “Y.” It is also noted that this is a late-war plate.
This example was recovered near Richmond which would fit the profile of late-war use.
