This is a 2.9 inch Confederate Read shell that was recovered in front of the Union breastworks at Chancellorsville. The breastworks were thrown up by men under the command of then Colonel Nelson A. Miles of the 61st New York. Miles commanded an important skirmish line which he turned into a defensive position. He commanded the line until he was severely wounded. He would later be awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.
The shell has a smooth body with light pitting. The pitting gets a little heavier near the top but it is nothing that detracts. Most of the fuse plug was removed during deactivation but some of it remains. The shell has been cleaned but small amounts of discoloration remain on the nose and one side. The iron sabot shows signs of being fired and the base has a nice lathe dimple.
Painted in white on the side of the shell is the recovery information which adds an interesting touch to the shell.
