US MODEL 1855 BAYONET RECOVERED AT STONES RIVER

This iron Model 1855 bayonet is complete. The blade is full length and the socket retains the locking ring. The surfaces are rusted and pitted throughout but not that badly. The active rust has been removed by electrolysis leaving behind a fairly clean iron surface. The locking ring though present is frozen.

This relic was dug on the battlefield of Stones River, Tennessee. This battle which took place on December 31st 1862 and January 2, 1863 resulted in a total of 24,645 casualties. The two armies under Rosecrans and Bragg numbered approx. 76,400.
