This kidney shaped canteen stands approx. 7.00 inches high x 5.50 inches long x 2.00 inches wide at its widest part. The canteen originally had two spouts on the top, one at either end. Now only one spout remains but the hole for the other is still visible. Each side also had 2 rectangular sling loops. Only three are present. One of the bottom loops has broken off. On the convex side of the canteen, near the top, are two pieces of tin approx. 4.00 inches apart. It appears as though each one formed an individual loop. They may have been for holding some attachment or filter or perhaps a portion of the sling. The top, bottom and convex side of the canteen are solid. The left half of the concave side has been pushed in. This exposes the interior and shows a center divider running vertically. The right half is almost complete despite being dented. There is a jagged hole that meas. approx. 2.50 x 2.00 inches. The left half is mostly there but it has been pushed way back and is almost flush against the front edge. Though the item is covered with rust throughout, the rust is no longer active. This item found in an 1862-1863 Union winter camp in Stafford County, VA.by well known relic hunter, the late Wendell Lang, Jr. Previously sold as item# R18433.
