Produced by the Federal Ordnance Department during the Civil War, this fired Hotchkiss percussion shell complete is with its fuse adapter, lead sabot, and base cup. Recovered from an unknown battlefield location, the defused projectile has its original time brass fuse adapter intact in the nose of the artillery round. Specimen wears its original, tight, lead sabot that exhibits its rifling distortions from firing. Shell body has the three flame grooves cut through the base cap. All gun metal surface is hard and smooth with light to moderate rust pitting overall. The iron base cup is intact and complete. Exterior of the cylindrical shell has acquired a dark patina. Length: 7¼”; diameter: 3.” A nice condition, intact, complete, Civil War Hotchkiss percussion shell.
