Item Code: R21229

This interesting little group consists of a piece of butternut colored cloth recovered from a burial pit at Antietam. The piece comes mounted in a 12.25 x 8.25 riker box. The actual piece of meas. approx. 11.00 inches long x 6.00 at its widest. The cloth has irregular borders with small bits of material missing but the central portion is mostly solid.

In with the cloth is a modern handwritten label that reads “SECTION OF A CS UNIFORM. RECOVERED IN SLIT BURIAL TRENCH ANTIETAM BATTLEFIELD. EXACT ONE IN HARPER’S WEEKLY NEWSPAPER, OCT. 18, 1862 ISSUE.”

With the cloth is a nice conditioned original copy of the Harper’s Weekly issue mentioned on the label described above. The center section contains several woodcuts of Antietam views based on photographs by Brady. Three do show bodies on the field and one shows a shallow trench or sunken road.

Very interesting and rare item.
