This shell is meant for use in a 3-inch rifle. This first pattern has only one bearing surface band just below the nose. The Pattern 2 will have a second band just above the sabot.
The body of the shell has very light surface pitting throughout.
The top bearing surface band is missing as is usually the case with these shells. There is no fuse in the nose allowing a clear look into the internal cavity. Fuse threads are present but worn.
The lead cup sabot is present and complete. Stamped into the base of the sabot is a very clear marking of “PATENTED S & CO AUGUST 12, 1861.”
Nice clean shell.
