CS 3 INCH VIRGINIA PATTERN READ “GROUND BURST” SHELL, RECOVERED FROM ANTIETAM

$265.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: R21686

Recovered 75 years ago at Antietam; exact location of recovery unknown. Relic shows moderate surface rust and pitting, and has never been cleaned. Ground burst shell is in two pieces which fit perfectly together; no iron was lost in the bursting. Nose would have taken a wooden fuse plug, now gone, and the protrusion where the lathe was is visible. The base also has a visible lathe marking. The brass sabot shows signs of rifling from firing, and has a small chip on one side. Three hand-filed flame grooves can be seen on the sabot and base of the shell. Overall a very interesting battlefield relic.
