A truly rare item. This is the tar matrix out of a 30-pdr Parrott shell. Embedded within the matrix are the lead case shot balls. Definitely not something you just dig up; this came out of a shell that was dissected. The shell was recovered near Ft. Fisher. Matrix has several small cracks and an air pocket that formed near the bottom. A portion at the top, which probably broke off during the unloading process, has been glued back in place. Approx. 6 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. A nearly unique item to illustrate what was on the inside of Parrott artillery shells.
