A very nice excavated US bit boss. Two of these brass items adorned the cavalry curb bit. There would have been one on each side near the cheek area of the horse's head. This example has the “swirled” background and no period between the "U" and the "S." This example is in great shape. It has a pleasing brown patina and excavated at Brandy Station, VA.
