RELIC CS KENANSVILLE CAVALRY SABER

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 819-17

This relic Confederate saber was recovered in the 1880’s from Luray, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley, where in 1864, a cavalry battle was fought. It is a Kenansville copy of a U.S. Cavalry saber. Close to half of the blade is present (16 inches long- it originally would have been 34-35 inches) and the only thing missing is the grip. The casting of the brass is crude with several imperfections, and the Roman numeral “XXVIIII” is etched into the handle, which is the assembly number typical of Kenansville swords. The guard is pointed at the top, which is also typical of Kenansville.

This was originally acquired by Civil War collector William F. Howard from New York in 1994 from The Horse Soldier collection of Shenandoah Valley relics. Howard is a Civil War historian and author of the book, “The Battle of Ball’s Bluff”.

Saber has some light surface rust which is typical of dug relics.

This is an outstanding find for a collector of Confederate relics.
