Rectangular brass plate with Gothic “NY” inside of a wreath. Plate has a keeper at one side of the face.
Reverse has a long, narrow tongue.
The plate is in excellent condition with only a minor dent along the top edge. Entire surface has a wonderful uniform brown patina.
Written in silver pen on the reverse is “FOUND IN VICINITY OF ‘COLD HARBOR’ & ‘GAINES MILL’ MARCH, 1973.”
These plates were issued by the State of New York to light artillery and cavalry enlisted men and infantry NCOs. Issuing ceased in 1864.
This is a beautiful wartime relic plate from the well-known collection of author and relic hunter Mac Mason. [AD]
