This shoulder board is stamped brass, faux embroidered with a single border. Brass has a light green patina. The reverse has the patent label, which is partially legible because of the hole in the center of board. It reads, “JAS. S. SMITH PATENT, 1861, 15 DUTCH ST. NY”.

Item was recovered from City Point, Virginia, after the explosion on August 9, 1864, that was a result of Confederate sabotage. Confederate Secret Service agent John Maxwell has smuggled a bomb with a timed fuse aboard an ammunition barge. It caused a tremendous explosion that shook the city and caused much damage.   [sm]
