The face of this plate has a semi-bright patina. There are some small areas of darker spotting. Some very small nicks on edge. The reverse has 100% of the lead fill and both iron hooks. Hooks both have light surface rust.
It was recovered from City Point, Virginia, after the explosion on August 9, 1864, that was a result of Confederate sabotage. Confederate Secret Service agent John Maxwell has smuggled a bomb with a timed fuse aboard an ammunition barge. It caused a tremendous explosion that shook the city and caused much damage. [sm]
