US EAGLE BREAST PLATE

$295.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 883-115

This US breast plate features the spread-winged eagle design. It was recovered from City Point, Virginia, after the explosion on August 9, 1864, that was a result of Confederate sabotage. Confederate Secret Service agent John Maxwell has smuggled a bomb with a timed fuse aboard an ammunition barge. It caused a tremendous explosion that shook the city and caused much damage.

Plate has a semi-bright patina, with high areas showing more original gilt. Some corrosion is present around border. Edge of plate has slight nicks.  Reverse of plate still retains lead fill and both iron loops are present. Loops both have surface rust.   [sm]
