WONDERFUL, CIVIL WAR, CONFEDERATE STATES “FRAME BUCKLE” IN EXCELLENT DUG CONDITION

Item Code: 889-54

This original, Confederate waist buckle is a spectacular dug specimen of a brass, rectangular ‘frame’ buckle recovered from the Saylor’s Creek Battlefield in Virginia. Constructed in the sand-cast mold process, this desirable, attractive, fixed tongue accouterment with high beveled edge frames is in excellent condition. It is still in very fine shape with no bends or dents and exhibits a smooth hard finish to the face and rounded corners. The buckle exhibits two fixed tongues and a center bar that is slightly offset. With no moving parts to contend with, these sturdy plates could and did absorb the rigors of hard field use. A fine brass specimen, this buckle measures approximately 53 x 66 mm and has acquired a mellow and pleasing, dark bronze / ochre patina on its face and back. No maker’s mark is visible.

Buckle rests in a riker case with a small modern paper note that gives the battlefield location. This very handsome, highly desirable, Confederate issue ‘fixed tongue frame buckle’ with beveled edges is in fine condition and would enhance any Confederate collection or American military belt plate display.     [ra]
