This shoe was recovered from City Point, Virginia, after the explosion on August 9, 1864, that was a result of Confederate sabotage. Confederate Secret Service agent John Maxwell has smuggled a bomb with a timed fuse aboard an ammunition barge. It caused a tremendous explosion that shook the city and caused much damage.

Main body of shoe is intact, but several small pieces have broken off. Leather is dry, has heavy crazing and cracks.   [sm]
