Excavated U.S. Hotchkiss shell with percussion fuse. Shell is complete with fuse, nose, sabot, and cup. The Hotchkiss patent information is faintly visible on the bottom. No flame grooves on this shell since they were not needed for percussion-fused shells as they were designed to explode on impact. Projectiles in this caliber were manufactured for use in boat howitzers. The shell is inert. It has three drill holes around it where it was unloaded, but some putty can easily hide those. Recovered in the greater Richmond area. Iron and lead are in good condition. [jet]
