This is a fired example of a CS Read pattern shell. Shell is in dug condition, with significant chipping to the iron around the base on one side. Overall, the iron shows only minor surface pitting. The distinctive rings around the base and body of the shell are very pronounced. The lathe lug at the nose has also chipped off. The copper fuse adapter is in place, but has been damaged, with about ¾ of the top flange missing. The brass sabot is intact, and shows rifling marks very well. Overall a decent Confederate shell in fired condition, illustrating the problems the Confederates had with their iron castings. Recovered between Todd’s Tavern and the southern end of the Wilderness battlefield. The shell has been deactivated, cleaned, and coated. [jet]
