Excavated Federal artillery fuse adapter known as a naval watercap fuse. Of wartime design, this tapered, cylindrical-shaped brass fuse adapter is the type utilized by the U.S. Navy in its big guns. The top flange of the fuse adapter measures 1¼” in diameter and the fuse is 2 3/8” long. There are two square notches to accommodate a spanner wrench on the top flange. No anvil cap present. Stamped on the flange head is “ORD.D.”(small anchor) / 1862” indicating it was produced by the U.S. Ordnance Department in 1862. This fuse has been fitted with a separate, threaded bushing to fit it in a larger shell. A previous collector wrote in white paint on bottom of fuse, “US ORD NAVY 1862”. Copper has acquired a pleasing dark green patina overall. This relic was recovered in Wilmington, N.C. [jet]
