Brass buttplate off of a civilian type rifle. Plate has a very sharp corner at top with a concave back and a bent bottom.

Item was found in a Confederate camp at Williamsport, Maryland. The Confederates crossed the Potomac River there several times. It is well known that many civilian type rifles found their way into military use.  [ad]
