This was a “battlefield pick up” Confederate saber bayonet. Reported to have been recovered at Antietam. It has been totally overcleaned and the handle painted gold. Overall length is nearly 25 ½”. Blade measures 20 ½”, has a fuller and has been polished and sharpened. The iron is shiny with scattered areas of dark, mottled spotting. Cross guard and handle are one-piece of cast brass. Top of cross guard features a forward-facing quillion atop a loop to mount the bayonet onto a rifle. The bottom portion of the cross guard has a rear-facing quillion. The handle grip good condition, but is missing iron spring-catch and button at the pommel end. The brass as mentioned above, have been painted bright gold.  [jet]
