Item Code: 355-33

A totally untouched Model 1860 Spencer Carbine with one of the finest histories we’ve ever seen! Accompanying the carbine is a magnificent old handwritten tag describing its history which reads, “While the conference between Lee & Grant was in progress at Appomatox (sic) Court House my uncle Samuel Reed Harris Sgt. Troop I 5th U.S. Cavalry rode up with dispatches. As he was leaving he noticed this Spencer leaning against a nearby fence. He took the carbine with him. Later he gave it to my father Hugh D. Scott of Gettysburg PA. At his death it passed to me. My mother was the sister of Sgt. Harris”. Signed “John Reed Scott Col. Retired U.S. Army”.

The carbine would remain in the Scott family until local dealer George Lower, The Gettysburg Sutler, purchased it in the Fall of 1978. George sold the carbine in catalog number 27, Winter 1978. The carbine is pictured on the cover and the write up is found on page 53, item number N07. The catalog comes with the Spencer, as well as a typed version of the handwritten tag.

A nice untouched Spencer Carbine in attic condition, all metal with a deep dark patina with surface grime. The wood shows normal wear, with minor dings and a small hairline crack. Cartouche is visible by saddle ring tang. Serial number 25975 is faint and matching!

Mechanically perfect, bore matches outside of carbine – dark with surface grime. All parts original and matching patina. Has letters “H D S” carved by lockplate.

A nice untouched carbine that was a silent witness to the end of the Civil War.  [jet]
