These excavated remains of a cartridges box consist of two leather pieces. The large front flap and the smaller top portion from the back of the box. The front flap exhibits an oval impression and two slits where a cartridge box plate was once attached and the initials “WTE” carved near the top. The two lower corners are curled which is a common characteristic of well used boxes where the soldier was regularly reaching into the box.  The portion from the back still retains the loops for the shoulder belt. This relic was recovered from the James River at City Point, the site of the supply wharf explosion. All leather is well preserved and stable.  [jet]
