$150.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 526-35

Iron section of rail is marked, “1865 SOUTHSIDE RAIL ROAD, APPOMATTOX VA. STATION”. Front and back of anvil are smooth, while top, bottom and sides are rough with pitting. Bottom has slight surface rust present. Measures 4 1/8” high x 3 ¾” wide at the base x 2” wide at the top.

This is a unique souvenir of the Southside Railroad at Appomattox, which was very important to General Lee’s army. It was a vital resource for the Confederacy as a supply line for Richmond and Petersburg during the Civil War. Beyond the lines of battle until the war's last year, the principal damage it suffered was the financial weakness caused by Confederate compensation policies and currency. During the last year of the war, considerable damage was inflicted by both sides until the conflict finally ended near Appomattox Station, of the Southside Railroad, at Appomattox Courthouse in April 1865.  [sm]
