Here is an excavated, seldom-seen Civil War Confederate 3” field artillery projectile commonly referred to as an Archer Bolt. The design was likely produced by Dr. Robert Archer a partner of Joseph Anderson, the superintendent at the Tredegar Foundry in Richmond. Constructed of cast iron, this bolt specimen was recovered from the Richmond area.  Featuring a pointed nose with a body that tapers to the base, with a 1 5/8” lead sabot fixed at the center of the bolt.

This bolt has been restored with some pitting having been filled in.  There is some loss to the lead sabot on one side. Recovered in the Richmond, VA area. Overall, a stable and very displayable artillery shell that is seldom seen.  [jet]
