This 3 inch Read Shell was recovered in the Atlanta area during construction of Highway 75. A Confederate ammo dump was uncovered that produced several of these unfinished Read shells along with 18/24 pound projectiles, some in the original Selma Arsenal shipping crates.

This Read has a very thick copper sabot with a yellow/reddish color brass. Lathe dimple on bottom. Has two thick and raised bourrelets typical of Atlanta/Macon Arsenal. Fitted for wood fuse plug, minor chipping along fuse hole. Very light ground action, very little pitting to body. Seldom seen on today’s market.   [ws]
