This is a nice example of a CS Read “Virginia” pattern shell. Shell is in dug condition, with moderate surface rust. The distinctive rings around the base and body of the shell are very pronounced. Fuse adapter is in place, but has been damaged in one spot, probably from firing. The brass sabot is intact, and shows signs of rifling from firing. Overall a fine Confederate shell in good dug, fired condition. Location of recovery unknown. [JT]
