This 3 inch Read shell was recovered in the Atlanta area during construction of Highway 75. A Confederate ammo dump was uncovered that produced several of these unfinished Read shells along with 18/24 pound projectiles, some in the original Selma Arsenal shipping crates.
This Read has a very thick copper sabot with a yellow/reddish color brass. The typical lathe dimple is present on the base. Small diameter fuse hole (~0.5”) for wood fuse plug, with very minor chipping along edge of the hole. The iron body of the shell is in very good “relic” condition and has been coated. Seldom seen on today’s market. [jet]
